The Road Ahead

The Story Behind the Image

Fog is my favorite condition for photography. Why? It transforms a scene, making the road ahead slowly vanish, which immediately invites the viewer to wonder what lies just beyond the bend. This was a dirt back road in Normandy, France. The trees, gently folded over the path, and the enveloping fog created a soft, protective canopy around the two walkers—a father and son sharing a quiet moment. I could feel the hushed atmosphere and hear their soft whispers.

The calmness of the fog strips away the world's distractions, allowing the mind to focus inward on the essential things.

From the start, this felt like an image reduced to its core. I chose black and white because the camera's original color rendition was a distraction;the monochrome palette, paired with the fog, distilled the scene to its emotional essence. To enhance the ephemeral quality of the mist, I finalized the piece by adding a subtle texture, mimicking the way fog swirls and moves through the air.
