Once Upon a Time

First Place Winner in Color

Covid Creations

If nothing else, the COVID isolation fostered a surge of creativity.Through challenges set by my photography group, The Image Salon, I focused my camera on items at home. My subject became a beloved collection of French santons—clay figures from Provence that depict the tradespeople of a village. These figurines, ranging from tiny to life-size, include larger, dressed versions like this couple, which was likely created in the 1930s by the well-known artisan Jouglas. Their clothing is nearly 100 years old!

I chose to memorialize them by creating a composite, setting the fishermen into a photograph of the old fishing shacks I’d captured at Greece’s Mesolonghi Lagoon. Learning the compositing technique was the final hurdle. The image that emerged from this period of home-bound creativity eventually placed first in a prestigious, juried photography show.

A view of my setup with my Santons on a table with a window to the right. I like to use natural light in my stilllife work. It is much kinder to my subjects than flash. I might add a small soft light in shadows but there was no need for this shot.

I then took the image I made, selected only the figures and placed them onto the image of the fishing shack as a background. It takes a little bit of doing to blend them into the scene. After that was done, it was time to work on color blending. (I have others but I need to work on them more before making them available!

Get a feel of how this would look framed and on the wall. This is a 20"x20" frame. Note I chose a room with a soft warm color palette. It would do well. in most any room in your house - from living areas to play areas to bedrooms.
