Moored in the Fog

The Maine coast in the fog is pure essence. The salt air, the bobbing buoys, the distant silhouettes of lobster boats and small offshore islands—all distractions vanish. Fog is the very atmosphere of this coast: an ethereal, mysterious veil that comes and goes, hiding familiar objects only to reveal them anew. This is the landscape of my childhood memory, the reason I seek to photograph in the fog whenever I can. Everything becomes still, a profound hush blanketing the water, broken only by the occasional cry of a gull.

When I first saw this image, I envisioned a more painterly version. Applying an impressionistic touch, the soft brushwork enhanced the gentle softness already created by the fog’s muted atmosphere. I combined the original photograph with a touch of digital painting to achieve a more mystical vision. Given the early hour, the scene held a natural bluish tint, which I chose to deepen. I hope you find as much peace and wonder in this final piece as I do. You can find its companion image and other interpretations of boats in the fog below.

A Peek Behind the Scenes of Stonington

A view of the dock in Stonington - this is a full fledged working community with boats coming and going pre-dawn to dusk.

My camera set up inside our inn just in case...(we were expecting a Nor'easter to hit which it did a few minutes after this shot!) The Harbor you see is the scene of the image above and others.

A foggy, misty view of the village from a pier early in the morning. Such soft light!!!

How Will It Look on a Wall?

Hanging on a Wall by Itself

This is a 19.5"x13" print framed with a white archival 2.5" mat and metal gallery matte black frame. Being a cool image, it can go well in bathrooms, a kid's room or a breakfast nook like this.

Hanging with a Friend!

Sometimes pairing images can have more impact. Both of these prints have been created alike in terms of treatment - color, mood, textures. These also look great over a large bed.
