LAST STAND
Just a Tree in a Lake
Just the remnants of a dead tree or a poetic sculpture waiting to be honored by a photograph of itself? Wandering around this quiet lake in northern Greece, I spotted a little leafless tree surrounded by sticks and leftovers of other trees and vegetation. This little guy seemed to be reaching up out of the jumble around him. I felt like I wanted to free him up and let him stand nice and tall for the remainder of his life. I visualized him without the jumble around him. When later I started to edit the image, I decided I wanted to keep a few of the small remaining sticks in the water which were whittled down to almost nothing. They seemed like a good balance, not detracting from the tree. But why dead trees?
Trees without their leaves reveal interesting sculptures created by their branches. They can be full and perfectly balanced or nearing the end of their life - somewhat more straggly and meager. I just love their simplicity and form as each is unique. This little tree on its last legs still serves a purpose as a roost for birds, giving them a place to rest. Wanting to emphasize the tree, I sought to create an image with minimal distractions. I took a moment to hold the shutter thus smoothing out the ripples of the lake to end up with a quiet, serene scene. I chose to render it in a monotone, black and white in this case, to again simplify and emphasize the lines of the tree. It makes me happy just looking at this little tree surviving as long as it has.

Imagine This on Your Wall
A quiet space calls for a quiet piece of art on the wall. Simplicity calms the brain to give creativity space to grow. This piece can work well in offices but also in spaces for relaxation - a living room, a bedroom or a reading nook.
The Art of Composing
Learning the ropes of visualizing and creating an impactful minimalist image. I am seen here with my mentor, Theo Kefalopoulos from Greece. It was a matter of knowing I could pick out that little tree from amongst the jumble of leftover trees and shrubs. You can see the ripples of the water that I sought to minimize and smooth out with a long exposure. In post processing I was able to remove some of the extra debris, showing only the essence of the subject.
