In the Pink
A Day Only a Photographer Can Love
A flood, some fog, light clouds at sunrise in winter on a
lake ten minutes from my house – a perfect combination to work in! The trees just seemed to be floating on top of the water. As the light appeared so too did the pink. Everything seemed to be pink – the sky, the water, a bit on the land far away and even the trees glowed a bit pink. Time to set the tripod down and do a long exposure to capture the stillness, peace and quiet. Pink is a happy color, and light glowing pink is so soft that one can only have hope for the day ahead. It turns what might be a somber gray day into a colorful uplifting day. This magic is not a regular occurrence on the lake so this day we got lucky!
I also toyed with a bit of intentional camera movement which show you in my “behind the scenes” section below. A simple abstract is the result. Just color in layers. The pink glow quickly dissipated, the fog began to lift, and the colors turned yellow on the horizon and the glassy lake creating a totally different feeling.
Twenty minutes later, I was at the wetlands of White Oak Creek to catch an osprey nest in a flooded tree skeleton as everything was bathed in yellow. A bit of fog lingered to give the scene an ethereal touch. No need for long exposure as the water was like glass. Not willing to give up my day of shooting, we moved over the Haw River finding it totally shrouded in heavy fog just as the sun decided to break through behind the tall trees only to glow in the running water. It was quite a day – so many different scenarios of pinks to yellows, fog to no fog and back to fog. A day only a photographer can love.
Behind the Scenes of a Foggy Morning
Soft Space, Soft Picture
A view of what a 20" x 20" image can look like when framed with a white 3.25" white mat and a narrow light silver frame. Just grab a book or your Kindle and curl up in a chair for a relaxed moment or two.
When you receive your print, you can custom frame it the way you prefer with a wider mat or frame. I tend to prefer a good sized but not overwhelmingly large mat and a simple black, white or silver frame.
