Winter's Survivors
The Story Behind the Tiny Red Flowers
Yellowstone National Park in winter—it was a dream come true. In February 2016, four of us joined a local photographer to explore the park. While most people are drawn to the grand scenes and abundant wildlife, something smaller caught my eye.
As we were hiking toward a waterfall, I stopped: a small clump of tiny, red flowers stood out against the pure, untouched snow. Shadows from the surrounding trees framed them perfectly as they rested, fighting to survive at the base of a snowdrift. Letting the others move ahead,I took a moment to frame a simple, minimal photograph. This image, for me, captured how even the smallest living things in Yellowstone can find the will to endure. The story of the small surviving in the large became a powerful symbol: a testament to the sheer will to endure. There is something to be taken from this in our lives today. This picture hangs on the walls of family, friends, and acquaintances in my circle. It is a source of replenishment of the soul.
Behind the Scenes
A broader view of the locaation of the flowers - in upper right corner is the path we were following when I spotted these little guys springing out of an embankment. The shadows in the background enticed me as they were leading my eye to the flower.
Winter's Survivors add a little brightness to a dark or mid-tone wall. The little touch of bright color stands out as do the flowers against the snow - a reminder that even the smallest can survive against all odds. The print is 30"W x 20"H and usually framed with a 3" matboard plus gallery frame, in this case white seemed appropriate.
