Uh Oh!! Trouble!

The Story Behind the Image

Rising before dawn in Rausa, Hokkaido, we set out to photograph Steller’s Sea Eagles. At 5:30 a.m., we boarded a metal fishing boat and I found a spot on its narrow side decks as the wind picked up buffeting us about. Overnight, ice from Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula had clogged the harbor. In the dark, our boat churned and slammed against the ice, unable to break free. As the sun began to emerge, the horizon glowed a brilliant yellow and orange and the eagles stirred and swooped along the seawalls. One eagle glanced up girding itself for another to dive-bomb from above. I quickly grabbed my telephoto lens to follow the action capturing their silhouette against the brilliant morning sky.
